Distinguished Professor Chai-Lin Kao of the Department of Medicinal and Applied Chemistry, College of Life Sciences, Kaohsiung Medical University, has long been dedicated to promoting research in the field of medicinal chemistry and has earned high recognition from the international academic community. His research team has achieved outstanding results in solid-phase synthesis and new drug development, and has participated in multiple European Union and international collaborative projects, demonstrating strong influence in the global medicinal chemistry community.
With strong recommendations from several internationally renowned scholars, Prof. Kao has been appointed President of the Asian Federation for Medicinal Chemistry (AFMC) for the 2026–2027 term. He has also successfully secured the opportunity to host the 2027 AFMC International Medicinal Chemistry Symposium (AIMECS) in Taiwan. This achievement not only brings great honor to Kaohsiung Medical University but also elevates Taiwan’s presence in the international academic arena of drug development.
Founded in 1992, the Asian Federation for Medicinal Chemistry (AFMC) is committed to promoting research exchange in medicinal chemistry across Asia and works closely with the European Federation for Medicinal Chemistry (EFMC) and the Medicinal Chemistry Division of the American Chemical Society (ACS MedChem), making it one of the most important medicinal chemistry organizations in the Asia-Pacific region.
AFMC organizes the AFMC International Medicinal Chemistry Symposium (AIMECS) every two years. Since 1995, the symposium has been hosted in rotation by Asia-Pacific member countries, including Japan, South Korea, China, Australia, Turkey, and Taiwan. It is the largest and most representative international conference in medicinal chemistry in the region.
Taiwan last hosted AIMECS in 2013 in Taipei. Successfully securing the opportunity to host the symposium again after many years highlights Taiwan’s strong visibility and contributions in the international medicinal chemistry field. The upcoming conference will once again make Taiwan an important platform for pharmaceutical science research in the Asia-Pacific region and further enhance the international influence of Kaohsiung Medical University and domestic research teams.
